Havasu Karate Taikyoku Kata

You must be deadly serious in training.  When I say that, I do not mean that you should be reasonably diligent or moderately in earnest.  I mean that your opponent must always be present in your mind, whether you sit or stand or walk or raise your arms.

“True Karate-Do is this:  That in daily life one’s mind and body be trained and developed in the spirit of humility: and that in critical times, one be devoted utterly to the cause of justice”.  Gichin Funakoshi

Taikyoku Kata (First Cause)

Master Funakoshi said this about Taikyoku Kata: Because of its simplicity, the kata is easily learned by beginners.  Nevertheless, as its name implies, this form is of the most profound character and one to which, upon mastery of the art of karate, an expert will return to select it as the ultimate training kata (page 42 Karate-Do Kyohan).

Things to know

Kata (forms) consist of a systematically organized series of techniques performed in a set sequence.  They include hand techniques, foot techniques, body shifting, defensive and offensive techniques.

Kata is practiced on an imaginary line called the “embu sen”.  This line looks like the capital letter H turned on its side.

There are 20 movements in Taikyoku Kata.  Beginners should take 40 – 45 seconds to complete.  Advanced students may take 5 – 7 seconds to complete.  Speed is not the ultimate goal.

In this Kata there is one stance, the forward stance (zenkutsu dachi).  There is one block, the down block (gedan barai).  And one strike, a mid level (chudan) lunge punch (oi-zuke).

There are two Kiai (spirit yell) in the kata.

Out line of Kata movements:

The kata starts and ends with a bow.

Yoi (ready stance).  The yoi stance is an integral part of any Kata, and one’s level of ability is already clearly evident from this stance.  One must therefor approach this stance with a very serious attitude (page 43 Karate-do Kyoan).  Bow cross the hands (fists) in front of the body as you return to a natural stance and say the name of the Kata “Taikyoku shodan”.

Beginners move slow until one has learned the order of a kata, he should concentrate on this rather than on applying much strength.  After understanding the basic structure of the kata, one should gradually apply more strength (page 38 Karate-do Kyoan). The count (rhythm) for beginners should be 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5 and so on.  For advanced students the count (rhythm) should be 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, making the turn, block and strike one complete movement.

There are no guaranteed techniques.  The advertisement that says “secret technique that will enable you to stop any bully and render him harmless in 5 seconds” is just empty advertising hype.  Your best technique is to be aware of your surroundings and avoid any possible situation that may put you in a self-defense situation.
